Today's Forecast: Piddly

No matter the breed, the land of new-puppy-joy is pocked with one similar component: piddle puddles.  While puddles of other constituency are for splashing and making the most of, these puddles seem merely a way to ruin something lovely, like new carpet or linen. No matter how intelligent, no matter how sweet, no matter how adorable, puppies have to pee; and along the way to a fully house trained dog, one must first encounter the reality of urine in all its many forms.  But one is presented with a choice: either pitch a fit at the "bad" puppy for doing what it is naturally supposed to do (which may cause it to have a fit of submissive urination), or find the lesson which sits at the bottom of a shallow pool of used water.

I choose the latter.

"Piddle" is defined as, simply, "urine." "Piddly" is defined as "insignificant." The link between them wreaks of comical irony.

Despite all of the joys of having a puppy, pee is just as much of a reality as any other aspect of having a canine family member.  The thing is gonna eliminate gallons over its lifetime.  Make sure you're ready, with plenty of pee pads, treats, and whatever else you decide to use to help train Fido that this natural occurrence is best limited to specially designated areas of the yard.

Although puppy pee is a very real factor of dog-ownership, it is not what people usually focus on when they are considering getting a dog.  It's a minor irritation, but it's not the focal point of deciding on increasing your family size by one furry fellow.  Instead, the joyful companionship, the delightful loyalty, and the heart-warming love are what remains the focal point.

Life is filled with many worthy pursuits that are sometimes avoided due to small inconveniences.  Usually, these are actually trivial in comparison to the rewards that could be enjoyed if a more positive attitude had been adopted.  For example, getting a degree is awesome, no matter how many times you have to miss a favorite show in order to write a term paper.   Being united to one you love in matrimony is both commendable and beautiful despite the fact that some days you may feel like cracking them over the head with a brick.  Although standing in line for sweltering hours can suck, finally getting sitting down in a roller coaster is almost always worth the wait. There are many similar instances. But the one thing about every one of them is the fact that they are worth enduring the small inconveniences they produce. Just hang in there.

Sometimes, it's difficult not to let the puddles of life get us down.  The level of irritation they cause can be down right excruciating.  If you find yourself in such a situation, the best advice I can offer is this: gratitude. Be thankful for the good that exists in your situation as opposed to looking entirely at what is negative.  Things could always be worse. (What if we had domesticated dinosaurs with large bladders? You could literally drown in a good splash from a brontosaurus!)  Be grateful for the happy times.  Look at the puddles as something minor, because they are.

Make peace with the piddle puddles.
